Healthcare costs in Meridian: what's different here
Meridian is Idaho's second-largest city and one of its fastest-growing, with a lot of young families in newer neighborhoods. For a family buying its own plan, the monthly price can be the biggest bill after the mortgage, and that's before anyone meets a deductible.
Families are also where the details matter most. Kids need checkups and sick visits, and those are everyday costs that health sharing doesn't share. That's why we pair sharing with a primary care membership, so the routine visits aren't a surprise bill. A family planning another baby soon needs to know the maternity rules before joining, because they're strict.
How the alternative works for Meridian households
Three pieces, each doing one job. None of them is insurance, and together they cover most of what a household uses, but not everything.
Direct primary care
A flat monthly membership for a primary care team: sick visits, checkups, questions and follow-ups, without a copay each time.
Health care sharing
Members share eligible large medical bills (ER, surgery, hospital stays) after you pay your Initial Unshareable Amount for that Need. Not insurance, and not guaranteed.
Dental savings plan
An optional discount plan for reduced fees at participating dentists. Health sharing doesn't share routine dental costs.
Boise, Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell sit within a short drive of each other, so most households here have several hospitals and urgent care clinics to choose from. Health sharing doesn't use a provider network, so you can use St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center or any other licensed provider. You pay up to your Initial Unshareable Amount for each Need, then submit eligible bills to be shared.
Who it fits in Meridian, and who should stay on insurance
Usually a good fit: healthy individuals and families who buy their own plan, self-employed people, early retirees under 65, and households whose income is too high for much Marketplace help.
Usually better on insurance: anyone with a serious ongoing condition who needs it paid for in year one, anyone planning a pregnancy in the next nine months, anyone who needs regular mental-health therapy, and anyone whose tax credit makes an ACA plan cheap.
In Meridian specifically: Planning a pregnancy within the next year? Health sharing only shares maternity costs when the due date is at least nine months after your start date, so an ACA plan may fit better for now.

Questions from Meridian
Does this work for families with young kids?
It can. Everyday care goes through the primary care membership, and big bills (a broken arm, an ER visit, a hospital stay) can be shared after the Initial Unshareable Amount. Ask us whether the virtual practice sees children of your kids' ages; some families use a local pediatrician on a self-pay basis instead.
Is this health insurance?
No. Health care sharing and direct primary care are alternatives to insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed, and it isn't Minimum Essential Coverage. Idaho has no state penalty for going without it.
